T20: 5 Players in Associate Teams Born in Test-Playing Nations

T20 World Cup 2021: 5 Players Born in Test-Playing Nations Who Are Playing for Associate Teams

There are five players born in Test-playing countries who are representing associate teams in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Ben Cooper

Twenty-nine-year-old Cooper, who was born in New South Wales in Australia, has been playing international cricket (ODIs and T20Is) for the Netherlands since 2013. He did not have a good outing at the T20 World Cup 2021, scoring just nine runs in two matches in the qualifier round. However, Cooper has had a good stint overall as a middle-order batter, with 1239 runs at 28.15 from 58 T20I matches. He has registered nine 50-plus innings with a top score of 91 not out.

David Wiese

Born in South Africa, David Wiese is currently representing Namibia. Wiese began playing international cricket for Namibia earlier this year. The all-rounder who represented South Africa in the T20 World Cup in 2016 has become one of the rare players to have represented two nations at the ICC global event. Being the son of a Namibian-born father, 36-year-old Wiese was always eligible to play for Namibia. Wiese has played 9 T20Is for Namibia (stats updated until match versus Pakistan on 2 November 2021). He is the team’s top scorer with 205 runs at 22.84, with a top score of 66 not out, his only half-century.

Richie Berrington

South African-born Richie Berrington, who is the vice-captain of Scotland, has played 71 T20Is for the side, with 1620 runs at 31.76, including a top score of 100. The right-handed batter has scored 103 runs in five matches (stats updated until the match versus Namibia on 27 October) in the T20I World Cup 2021, making him the highest scorer for the side.

Roelof van der Merwe

South African-born Van der Merwe has represented the Proteas in two T20I world cups (in 2009 and 2010). The all-rounder began playing for the Netherlands in 2015. The current World Cup is the player’s second outing for the Netherlands at the global ICC event — he also featured for the Dutch at the 2016 edition. Van der Merwe had a poor outing in the qualifiers of the current edition where he went wicketless in the three games he featured in. The 36-year-old has played 33 T20Is for the Dutch side, with 403 runs at 23.70 with a top score of 75 not out and 40 wickets at 17.25, with the best haul of 4/35.

Stephan Myburgh

Left-handed opening batter Stephan Myburgh has played 35 T20Is for the Netherlands, in which he has scored 763 runs at 23.84, with 5 fifties, including a top score of 71 not out. With 22 runs from two games in the qualifiers, the 37-year-old South African-born disappointed his fans who were looking for an encore of the 2014 competition in which Myburgh had shone.

Conclusion

Of the above, two players — Roelof van der Merwe and David Wiese — have represented two teams at T20I world events, making them members of an exclusive club of nine players to have done so.
